International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

For the purpose of satisfying the growing demands of the international community for Chinese language teachers and facilitating Chinese language education in other countries, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC), China has set up the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. This scholarship funds two kinds of activities: degree program and short-term study in China. This scholarship contributes to building an international talent pool for Chinese language teachers by supporting outstanding young people to study in China.

●Scholarship for Degree Programs

The programs offer scholarship for foreign learners with fairly advanced Chinese proficiency, young people aspiring to become Chinese language teachers, and in-service Chinese language teachers to pursue bachelor's degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) or related disciplines and master's or doctoral degree in TCSOL in China.

●Scholarship for Short-term Study in China

The programs provide scholarship for in-service Chinese teachers and Chinese learners studying TCSOL and related majors in China, with terms of four weeks, one semester or one academic year.

At present, Chongqing University, Southwest University, Chongqing Normal University, Chongqing Jiaotong University, Sichuan International Studies University are designated as the host universities for successful applicants of this scholarship. 5 Institutions support the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

Chongqing University

Chongqing University was founded in 1929 with the vision of building a “well-equipped and influential university”. By the 1940s, the University had developed into a comprehensive university with a complete system of disciplines covering liberal arts, science, engineering, business, jurisprudence, and medicine, etc. In 1952, it became a multi-disciplinary university with focus on engineering disciplines after a round of nationwide faculty adjustment. In 1960, it was designated as a national key university. Since the Opening-up and Reform, the University has evolved into a higher education institution that mainly consists of engineering disciplines together with multiple other disciplines after all-around restoration, adjustment, reform, and construction. In 1998, the university was approved as a university for key construction under the state “Project 211”. In 2000, former Chongqing Jianzhu University and Chongqing Architecture Junior College merged with Chongqing University, together constituting the new Chongqing University. In 2001, it became a university for key construction under the state “Project 985”. In 2017, it was elected as a state “Class-A University under the National World-First-Rate University Construction Program”. In 2022, it was elected as a “Double First-class University” in the second round assessment. Hence, the University has entered a new era, striding toward the educational goal of a world-class university with Chinese characteristics. Chongqing University has a full range of disciplines, covering 11 categories, namely science, engineering, economics, management, jurisprudence, literature, history, philosophy, medicine, education, and art. Now the University has 7 faculties, 35 schools, and 7 affiliated hospitals. The number of faculty and staff is over 5,300 persons, the student population is over 50,000 persons among whom over 24,000 are postgraduates and over 26,000 are undergraduates. The campuses occupy a total land area of over 5,300 mu (approximately 883 acres), consisting of Campus A, Campus B, Campus C, Huxi Campus and Liangjiang Campus.

Southwest University

Founded in 2005, Southwest University (SWU) encompasses Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University, which share an origin dating back to 1906. The school enjoys a long-standing history as its fame through ceaseless strive towards academic innovation and integration with social development. As a member of “211 Project” and “Double First-class” universities, SWU has an extensive set of disciplinary categories including philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and art. Chongqing Normal University

Chongqing Normal University was founded in 1954 with a traceable history dating back to the Public Eastern Sichuan Normal University in 1906. It has three campuses, respectively located in the Chongqing University Town, Shapingba District and Beibei District with total land coverage of 2688 mu. The University has 17 schools, 4 doctor program of general discipline, 24 master programs of general disciplines, 74 full-time undergraduate education programs, and 14 municipal key general disciplines covering 12 subjects, including philosophy, law, economics, education, literature, science, and etc. In the University, there are over 25,000 full-time undergraduate students and above 8100 master or doctor candidates. There are 2,200 active faculty members, including more than 900 senior faculty members and nearly 1,000 PhDs. Following the trend of internationalization, the University has been persisting in open-up operation. It has established sound partnerships with education institutes in more than 30 countries and regions, including Russia, America, Australia and Britain for Sino-foreign joint development, cooperative research, mutual visits of teachers and students, or cooperation and exchange in other forms. It has established overseas education institutes, including Confucius Institute at Education Institute of Rwanda University in Rwanda, Confucius Institute at University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka, Confucius Institute at Edge Hill Universityin UK, and Confucius Institute at Troy University in US, Widyakartika University Chinese Normal College in Indonesia. Also, the University facilitates its “CNU Foreign Students Education Program” to enroll students from all over the world, as a recipient of governmental scholarship, scholarship for Confucius institutes and mayoral scholarship from Chongqing People’s Government for foreign students.

Chongqing Jiaotong University

Chongqing Jiaotong University (CQJTU)is a teaching and research university with distinctive transport characteristics, focusing on engineering and coordinated development of multiple disciplines, Founded in 1951, the university now has 15 doctoral programs, 65 master's programs, 58 undergraduate majors, covering engineering, science, management, economics, literature, art and other disciplines, and is one of the earliest universities in Chongqing to teach Chinese as a foreign language. Currently, the university has over 2,000 faculty members, including more than 1,500 full-time teachers and more than 700 senior titles. There are more than 27,000 full-time students,Among them, there are over 3,500 doctoral and master's students and 24,000 undergraduates currently enrolled,Over 150,000 talents of various types and levels have been cultivated cumulatively.The university started to recruit international students in 2004, established Confucius Institute with University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin in 2009, hosted the Confucius Institute in Washington State, USA in 2021,set up Chinese Language and Culture Training Centre in 2010.got the approval of Chongqing's first HSK test site in 2012, opened the undergraduate major of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages in 2014, and then opened undergraduate majors of International Trade, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Civil Engineering, Tourism Management, and so on taught in English,Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages and Master of Business Management(MBM) approved in 2018, More than 1,000 international students from 31 countries across five continents have been trained, they are engaged in translation, management, Chinese language education and infrastructure construction in Chinese-funded transport and engineering organizations, Confucius Institutes (Classrooms), Chinese and foreign trade enterprises, and cultural exchanges and training, institutes, and are well received by the units and affirmed by the society.

Sichuan International Studies University

Sichuan International Studies University (Chuan Wai or SISU for short), one of the first four state run foreign language colleges in China, sits in Shapingba District, Chongqing Municipality. It is a full-time university approved by the Ministry of Education and run by Chongqing Municipal People's Government. Carrying on the founding spirit of "unity, diligence, rigorous attitude and realistic approach" and abiding by the motto of "global vision, academic excellence", the university distinguishes itself with an international perspective, a focus on foreign language education, and a commitment to diversifying disciplines. The university has strategized pursuing qualitative development that prioritizes academic excellence, stresses international exchange and balanced development of all disciplines. The university has now evolved into a multi-disciplinary higher institution. In addition to the core discipline of foreign languages and literature, the university also offers doctoral, master, bachelor degrees and diploma programs in Chinese language and literature, journalism and communication, education, economics, management, law and other disciplines. The university also offers a post-doctoral research program in foreign languages and literature. The university academic journals Foreign Languagesand Literature and English Studies are well recognized among the academia. The university is a key provider of foreign language and international communication professionals and a leader in international studies, economic and foreign trade research in the southwest region of China. There are 55 undergraduate majors, of which 26 are foreign language majors (24 foreign languages). There are currently more than 17,000 full-time students and 1,349 faculty members. The university covers an area of 71 hectares and has complete teaching facilities, including the most complete foreign language teaching multimedia classrooms in Southwest China, a pronunciation laboratory, a simultaneous interpretation laboratory, a translation laboratory, a business simulation laboratory, a comprehensive communication skills laboratory, and an interlanguage corpus laboratory, and the Chongqing Foreign Affairs Experimental Center. SISU has established international cooperation and exchange programs with more than 100 universities and institutions in over 30 countries or regions. It has set up 3 Confucius Institutes jointly with the Russian University of Nizhni Novgorod, the Togolese University of Lomé, and the Central Education Service Center in Eastern Ohio, USA. Additionally, the university has set up one Confucius Class in Siyuan Chinese Language School in Ecuador.
